Resin water filter recharge instructions and first time use

Using our 3 way ion exchange water softener filter is an easy way and seems the most economical solution to soften household water for use with an espresso machine.

Installing the filter for the first time
Before installing the filter for the first time, make sure to mark the intake hose in the water tank. Insert the water filter into a cup of cold water and let the beads absorb water. Shake well to let air out and look that the beads inflate. Run cold water through the filter under your water faucet. Once it seems that all beads are wet and inflated, insert the tip into the intake water hose and insert to water tank. (when you run the machine for first time after that, make sure the filter isn't floating).
More likely there are 2 hoses in your water tank. Check with your service dealer to identify which is the intake hose. Normally there are 2 ways to identify it. Some machines come with the filter already installed on the intake hose. In this case, before removing it, mark the intake hose with a marker or with rubber band. In other espresso machines, the intake hose is identified as the hose that is cut straight as oppose to the over flow hose that is cut in an angle.

Important notes
Replacing the resin filter periodically is recommended for efficiency of water softening and maximum 3 way protection of scale, sediment and particle prevention.  Sediment easily clogs the espresso machine pump and pipes. In addition, at some point the sediment filter paper can get too soft with time, may tear and let sediment and even the resin beads pumped into the machine. Therefore, it is recommended to replace the filter every 30 Litres or 250 coffee cups, whatever comes first, Max 45 days. After 45 days, being soaked in water all time,  there is higher chance of the Filter deterioration even if the machine was not used at all.

Save over 30% off regular price for bulk package resin water filters.

Fridge filters do not remove scale or soften the water. They remove odor, chlorine and other taste. Mineral water are not sediment and scale free but they are likely to be odor and chlorine taste free. Use any of the above on top of the resin water filter is a good idea.
Reverse osmosis filtration system removes scale but with some espresso machines is not recommended to use. Consult with your espresso machine service center.

Optional - Recharging the water filter resin:
Using Kosher salt  to recharge the resin, exchange the hardness minerals for sodium and renew the resin ability to soften the water. When hard water passes through the resin beads, the scale/hardness minerals (ions) attached to the resin beads, leaving behind the sodium ions that create scale in hot water. This is the process of softening the water by ion exchange. At some point the resin ability to absorb the hardness is exhausted and it can not soften the water anymore. This is when we want to replace the filter or recharge it.
The resin beads can be recharged by running and flushing salt water through it. The fresh sodium ions in the salt water release out the hardness ions from the resin beads and they are renewed. Any excess salt is not absorbed and rinsed away.
Take out the water filter from the espresso machine water tank and mark the intake hose. Dissolve 2 spoons of kosher salt in warm (not hot) water. Flush the solution through the filter using a funnel. Once done, flush and run about 2-3 cups of fresh cold water through the filter (you can do it under the faucet) until you taste the output for no salty flavour. It can now be reinstalled.
We do not recommend to recharge more than twice within a period of 45 days. Charging helps the resin to regain its effectiveness and can be repeated many times before the resin loses it's power but that is not the same case for the sediment paper filter which can not be recharged.
Do not use table salt or other salts that may contain anti clumping agents and iodine.
Repeat about every 10 liters. Please read notes below.
